Achieving specified objectives of I.R. Iran 20-years vision and realization of important role of petroleum industry in the state scientific, economic, social, political and international activities, require developing and deep applied studies and researches in order to solve problems and help governmental and industrial senior officials in decision-taking and decision-making. In this regard, paying attention to studies and researches related to energy economics, management and human resource and technology strategic management in high-level of petroleum industry is an essential requirement and a shortcut and reliable path to achieve mid and long-term goals.

Institute for International Energy Studies (IIES) affiliated to Ministry of Petroleum established in 1991, in order to response to study and research needs in the field of energy economics, especially oil and gas, and finally to serve policy-makers and planners. IIES succeeded in receiving the license of research and training activities at higher education levels from the Development Council of the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology, in 1996, and became a scientific research center. With respect to recent changes and requirements state energy sector (oil and gas industries), organizational structure of IIES revised in 2006, and the board of trustees approved formation of "Energy Economics" and "Management and Human Resource" research centers. Furthermore, with respect to the need to research in managing, developing and applying energy technologies, formation of "Technology and IT" research center approved in 2008 by the board of trustees, and the center began its activities in 2009.

Considering significant role of research in management and human resources and energy strategic studies, IIES, under measures of the petroleum minister and the board of trustees, tries to expand research areas using domestic potential of industry, available facilities in the country and global achievements.
